Well written Dimitri. A lovely poem.

Thank you Cliff, he was my great grandfather John Daniel Van Lange- 1834-1906- Son of Colonel Van Lange of the Netherlands and Elisha Coey. The Colonel left his regiment and decided to stay behind after the Dutch handed over of the three colonies of Demerara/ Berbice in 1803 and Essequibo in 1812.
Colonel Van Lange earlier family was decimated by fever and two remaining survivors returned to the Netherlands without him. Later in life the Colonel almost died of malaria but for the excellent care of Elisha Coley, his second wife, who had my great grandfather, which the poem is all about. John Daniel Van Lange served in the capacity of a magistrate in Upper Demerara and later, the general manager of Bugle Timber Company in1800s Essequibo. He is entombed in a church yard with his wife Mary Fiedtkou at a place called Karia on the Essequibo Coast.

    Hi Dimitri,

I’m wondering what would have been Colonel Van Lange’s birth name? Do you know it?

Thanks Floyd, his first name is still a mystery like so much of history waiting to be uncovered.

What else do we know about Colonel Van Lange? I’d like to help find his name.
