Guyana’s famous John “Slingshot” Drepaul, a man for all seasons and his charming wife, Ingrid, continue to diligently prepare his CD, “Christmas is Family,” which could not be released for the 2013 Christmas Season as planned. Over a three-way telephone interview with Guyanese musician/ entertainer Slingshot and his wife, Trinidadian lyricist/ entertainer Ingrid, I came away at the end of the conversation with a wealth of information pertaining to the workings of a composer’s mind and perspective.  Continue reading

Bill Rogers {Augustus Hinds} was a famous early Guyanese Calypsonian responsible for putting Guyana on the recording map when he recorded for RCA Victor Bluebird Record Company in 1934. He was also responsible for the creation of Shanto music, a genre that is specifically Guyanese.

Young Bill Rogers and also calypsonian {Roger Hinds} speaking for the Caribbean Beat in Nov-Dec 2008 issue said, “My father was known as Bill Rogers, but his real name was Augustus Hinds. He was the person responsible for putting Guyana on the recording map when he recorded for RCA Victor Bluebird Record Company in 1934.  That was the top recording company in those days. With over its 80% unspoiled rainforest, Guyana is a hothouse of interest at every turn to botanist. To each region, distinct plant associations are found according to the differences of soil and its formation. From the alluvial flat coastal plains that slowly rises to the rich vegetation covered sand dunes, river valleys, wet savannahs, hills and untouched mountains, the transition from one region to another is for the most part gradual and is never so abrupt that distinct zones of flora are defined.   Continue reading
