THE ECSTASY OF GOLD

By Dmitri Allicock

.

Deep in the heart of Guyana’s Jungle

Jaguars, snakes and waterfalls tumble

Highland shouts and echoes of gold

The ecstasy of gold for souls so bold

Young men from hinterland and city

Torrent of rapids and malaria to pity

A thousand ways of misery and death

But only gold fever upon their breath

Digging with dredge, batel and spade

Glorious nuggets of hope are prayed

The lure of land of El Dorado so old

Trembling shouts of glistening gold!

This is a beautiful poem about the young men determine
To give their all in their quest to find gold. Many of them lost their lives, suffered the terrible fate of having malaria, or rob, of what little they achieve. A few are lucky, out of the interior, heading for home, but not before stopping at the local rum shop to have a good drink. Families waiting with anticipation
Longing to embrace their love ones. I know, for my brother, spend many years hoping to find that special nugget.
Dmitri I thank you for the many countless hours of writing.
Your pen is a paint brush that moves forward and backward,
Creating a picture of beauty. The subject comes alive, I can reach it and touch it,,, so beautiful.
